Character Name: The Lady Sif
Canon: Thor (2011 Film)
Canon Point: Post-Film, Pre-Avengers

Personality: The Lady Sif is less of a lady and more of Bro. She’s at her happiest when out questing with friends, running spears through things, and giving punches where punches are deserved. The movie hints that she is one of the first female warriors in Asgard, and started off as a “maiden.” By the time the film starts, she’s standing alongside the royal family at Thor’s crowning. That’s a hell of a climb up. Sif is a very goal oriented individual, which colors a lot of her personality. When she sees a problem in front of her, she tackles it directly. While this makes her a good warrior, it also means that she goes about life with a set of blinders on and tends to see things in a binary – as relevant and irrelevant to her needs. Anything that helps her and her friends protect Asgard is useful, and anything not related to Asgard isn’t. She doesn’t think much of humanity. Not in a derogatory sense – she literally doesn’t think about it, because it’s so disconnected from Asgard.

In general, Sif is more of a closed off person. She’s got five dudes that she spends most of her time with, and only seems to like them about 51% of the time. But she’s a very loyal friend once you get in there. She supports her comrades, even when she doesn’t agree with their actions, and would consider it an honor to die for them (most AEsir think that dying in battle is keen). She’s got a sharp sense of humor and is hinted, along with Hogun and Loki (before he went nuts and tried to kill a bunch of people) to be on the more reasonable end of Thor’s brain trust. Again, it goes back to that binary – being a thoughtful fighter is more useful to Asgard than being a rash one. The only time in the film that we actually see Sif lose her cool isn’t in battle. It’s in the throne room, when Loki refuses to end Thor’s exile. When the Warriors Three have to hold someone back from flipping out, you know a button’s been pushed. Trying to kill her in battle isn’t a big deal. Threatening one of her friends is.

History: In the comics, Sif has a very plentiful back history. However, while they are both badass ladies, Movie!Sif and Comic!Sif are different in some pretty key ways. In the comics, there are plenty of female warriors on Asgard – Sif is simply one of the best. In the movie, it’s implied that Sif being as high ranking a warrior as she is is a Very Big Deal. Comic!Sif is the love of Thor’s life. Movie!Sif is not. Since we don’t learn a great deal about Sif in the movie, I am borrowing from some comic elements and incorporating them into her history. You can read a synopsis of the movie here. I’m going to provide some further details/expand on certain things that we saw hinted at in the film that characterize how I see Sif.

The Lady Sif comes by the title honestly, as the daughter of a lower-ranking noble. She is the half-sister of the powerful Hemidal, though he was fully grown and already at his post when she was born. She spent enough time at the palace growing up that she eventually became a playmate of the princes. She and Thor got on especially well, as she wasn’t intimidated by his titles and he didn’t treat her as a delicate little thing. They spent a lot of time beating each other up, like bros do. She and Loki got off to a rougher start. He cut off her golden hair and turned it black, as a prank. There was likely some hope on her parents’ part that the time spent at the palace would put Sif into a position where she might marry advantageously. However, as Sif grew older, she knew that the life of a noblewoman wouldn’t ever be for her. With Thor’s support, she pledged her services to Odin, and through a long period of trial, eventually proved herself one of the best warriors in Asgard, training alongside the princes and their personal guard. During that training period, Sif, Thor, The Warriors Three and (perhaps reluctantly) Loki solidified themselves as a competent group of fighters, each holding a facet of what the others lacked. When the film opens, before everything goes to hell, we’re looking at a group of people that have known, trusted, and fought together for well over a thousand years.

And then Loki goes nuts because of internalized racism and tries to kill everyone, pretty much. Sif and the Warriors Three have one motivation behind their actions throughout the movie: ending Thor’s exile. After pleading with Loki to no success, they go to Earth themselves, very likely not understanding how far gone the second prince is until he unleashes the Destroyer on them. From Sif’s point of view, things went to hell almost overnight. The end of the film sees Sif expressing her sympathies to Frigga, who quietly comforts Sif in return. Rather than being angry, Sif seems to express regret at the end of the movie for the fact that things have been changed irrevocably. Loki is gone, Thor is emotionally tied to Earth rather than Asgard, and the same Bifrost that spent so many centuries transporting Sif and her friends off on their adventures is broken. The life they’d cherished is gone, and the time has come to carve out a different future.

Abilities: Asgadians are born with superior strength, longevity, and endurance/increased healing abilities. They’re born to fight, basically. But outside of that, Sif is an accomplished fighter, both with weapons and at hand-to-hand combat.
Strengths: Loyal, dedicated, an intelligent fighter, excellent bone structure.
Weaknesses: Gets so focused on her objectives that she fails too see anything outside of them. Her loyalty to Asgard would normally be a strength, but in this game will make it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, for her to accept any sort of life where she isn’t a warrior.

First Person Sample: [Sif did not understand her communicator, to start. If something like this had ever existed in Asgard, they had moved on from it long before she was born. But things on Midgard followed a simple enough pattern, and her false caretaker provided the rest of the explanation. When she felt that she would be left alone for a long enough period of time, she switched on the video. She looked calm, but determined.]

I am Æsir. I am The Lady Sif, warrior of Asgard and servant to Odin the Allfather. I have seen greater illusions than this, and they have been broken. If you know the truth, as I do, let us work together to overcome this. If you cling to the false tales they whispered in your ears, then may Hel have you. I’ve no use for cowards.

Third Person Sample: When Sif was a girl, before she began her training proper, she’d been forced to improvise. She made a list of what qualities a warrior would need to have, and then set herself upon tasks that proved those qualities.

Patience. A warrior needed patience. And so, for her birthday, she requested that Mother make all of her favorite foods. Rare steak, rubbed with spices. Golden apples, poached and sweet. Crisp summer vegetables, and hot cider to wash it all down with. At lunch, she fixed herself a heaping plate. She sat down in front of it, napkin in her lap, knife and fork in her hand. And then she willed herself not to eat until dinnertime, as the food turned cold her front of her, only an arm's length away.

This felt a bit like that. Sif walked around in a world that was not her own, with people who spoke only in lies, and felt ever agitated. Like the answer was just in front of her, but she could not yet reach out to grab it. Patience. A warrior needed patience. And this would test hers like nothing ever had.

For the moment, she was trapped here. Where Thor may have raged, Sif tried to be smarter about her own exile. She would not deny who she was – she was no liar. But she could try to understand the place that she was in now, until an escape arose. Which led to the habit of nightly walks. Tonight, she directed herself towards the historical district. She felt calmer, here, than in the rest of the city. Though the buildings weren’t nearly as ancient as those in Asgard, there was something to be said for one old thing being in the company of another.
